According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) 2022 survey, veterinarians classified 61% of cats and 59% of dogs as overweight or obese.

As a result, pet food manufacturers have been developing a wide range of weight-management products to address this growing problem. But did you know that probiotics are also attracting attention as a potential tool for managing obesity in dogs and cats?

The importance of probiotics for gut health is already well recognized, but some researchers have also reported that probiotics may help with weight management in dogs.

In this study, scientists investigated the effects of two probiotics—Enterococcus faecium IDCC 2102 and Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301—on dogs fed a high-fat diet.

According to an article published in Veterinary Microbiology, “these probiotics enhanced systemic energy utilization in response to excess caloric intake, prevented lipid accumulation, and restored stability in the fecal microbiota.” The study also reported that they reduced systemic inflammation caused by a high-fat diet.

Probiotics and Canine Obesity

Probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that live in the gut, play an important role in maintaining digestive health in both humans and pets. However, this study conducted in South Korea focused specifically on their effects on metabolism.

Researchers from Seoul National University, Kyungpook National University, and Chungnam National University explored whether these two probiotics could help alleviate obesity-related issues in dogs consuming a high-fat diet.

The results showed that both E. faecium IDCC 2102 and B. lactis IDCC 4301 significantly reduced weight gain and lipid accumulation in dogs fed a high-calorie diet.

The study also took a closer look at the biological mechanisms behind these effects, revealing notable benefits related to systemic inflammation, lipid metabolism, and hormonal regulation.

Modulation of the Gut Microbiota

Both IDCC 2102 and IDCC 4301 were found to positively affect the gut microbiota by promoting beneficial bacterial groups such as Lactobacillaceae, Ruminococcaceae, and S24-7.

As a result, levels of pro-inflammatory bacteria associated with a high-fat diet were reduced, helping to improve gut balance and suppress inflammatory microbes. When inflammation decreases, normal fat-cell function can recover, excess fat accumulation can be reduced, and this may help prevent or improve obesity.

Improved Energy Utilization

The probiotics promoted pyruvate metabolism, supported glucose regulation, and increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production. In particular, B. lactis IDCC 4301 enhanced the production of short-chain fatty acids, which are essential for efficient energy production and utilization.

This may help dogs burn dietary energy more effectively and reduce the amount stored as fat. When energy is used efficiently, excess calories are less likely to be converted into body fat, which can help limit weight gain.

Increased Dopamine Production

E. faecium IDCC 2102 was also found to promote dopamine production, which may help restore normal feeding behavior in dogs. This is particularly important because abnormal overeating behavior and glucose intolerance in obese animals have been linked to disruptions in dopamine signaling.

Related article

Probiotics for Supporting Gut Health in Dogs and Cats: Benefits and Side Effects

Implications for Anti-Obesity Pet Products

By modulating gut bacteria, improving energy utilization, and promoting dopamine production, these probiotics may offer a promising way to address obesity-related health problems in pets.

As demand grows in the pet food market for functional ingredients, the use of probiotics could create opportunities both for improving pet health and for commercial growth.

Although the findings are promising, the researchers noted that further study is needed to determine how these probiotics can be applied to the management of metabolic diseases. This also suggests that these probiotics may offer benefits that extend beyond obesity management alone.

As the pet food industry continues its efforts to improve animal health, probiotics could become an innovative solution for weight management in pets such as dogs and cats.

However, to fully unlock their potential, further research using metagenomics and metabolomics will be needed. This should provide a deeper understanding of their mechanisms and their impact on animal health.

Related article

Why It Is Important to Develop Highly Digestible Dog Food for Dogs

Obesity-related health problems are becoming one of the most serious issues for dogs and cats in many countries, including Japan.
